How to feel comfortable in front of a camera | 5 tips from a Brighton Brand Photographer

When I speak to my clients during their planning session I often hear things like “I don’t like having my photo taken” or “I never look good on camera”. Now, there is a big difference between the two. Basically everyone can look good on camera. But what if I was about to tell you that, besides looking amazing in your pictures, you might embrace your business portrait or brand photo session and even, dare I say it, enjoy it?

When you own a small business, and you represent your own brand, it’s essential to get some professional business portraits taken. Feeling shy in front of the camera can become a big barrier for a lot of people when it comes to booking their personal brand photoshoot. I would love to share my personal top 5 tips for feeling confident in front of my camera so that you can embrace who you are and actually enjoy your portrait session with me!

  1. Look at yourself with a positive mindset and stop focusing on the things you don’t like about yourself

We should all do this, to be fair! We are all beautiful in our own unique ways. There is no need to focus on the little details that you don’t like about yourself. Together we can create some beautiful photos that stay true to who you are as a person.

  2. Pick a brand photographer for your business portrait session that you feel comfortable with

It is super important that you trust your brand photographer and that you feel comfortable around him or her. It’s part of my job to make you feel at ease when we start shooting, so I like to build a relationship with every single one of my clients during their photoshoot. I focus on capturing a true connection and that is why I invest so much time in getting to know you and your business.

  3. Relax, just breathe…

Take a few really deep breaths before we start shooting - I will do some as well! Relax those shoulders and let me bring out your personality in the best way possible.

  4. Don’t forgot the reason why you have booked a business portrait shoot

Your brand shoot isn’t just about you getting some pictures of you, it’s about showing potential clients who you are as a person and what your brand is all about. So there is a bigger picture here.

  5. Look through the images objectively

My last tip is probably the most important one, and something that I’d really like you to remember when you are going through your online gallery for the first time. It is so easy for us to look at photos and focus on the things that we don’t like. When it comes to looking at your photos, keep an open and positive mind, and remember the purpose of your business portrait shoot. Remember how good you felt during the shoot and look at your images through the eyes of your ideal client. Ask your friends and family to look at your pictures as well and see how they react when they see them.

If you are considering booking in a brand photo shoot for yourself, then I’d love to hear from you!
